Self-Directed IRA

Types of Individual Retirement Accounts

The first thing an investor needs to do is choose the type of Individual Retirement Account ("IRA") that is best suited for his or her needs.  Exeter Trust Company can help.  Our Self-Directed IRA Trust Administrators can help decide which Self-Directed Individual Retirement Account is most appropriate for the investor, including:

  • Traditional IRA

  • Rollover IRA
  • Inherited IRA
  • Roth IRA

  • Roth Conversion IRA
  • SEP-IRA

  • SIMPLE IRA

Self-Directed IRA

Once the investor has selected the appropriate type of Individual Retirement Account to meet their needs, they will need to decide which Self-Directed IRA Custodian to work with.  It is important to note the term "Self-Directed IRA" or "Self-Directed IRA Custodian" can be very misleading.

Individual Retirement Accounts ("IRAs") are technically all "Self-Directed IRAs" or "SDIRAs" because the investor chooses the IRA Custodian.  IRA Custodians include commercial banks, savings banks, trust companies, trust departments of banks, securities/brokerage firms, mutual fund companies, and insurance companies.  However, not all IRA Custodian are created equal.

Self-Directed IRA Custodians

The real issue that an investor needs to consider when selecting a Self-Directed IRA Custodian is the type of investments that he or she wishes to purchase and hold inside of their Self-Directed IRA.  The investor must be careful to select a Self-Directed IRA Custodian that will allow the specific type of investments in which the investor intends to invest.

IRA Custodians may only permit commercial bank accounts, other IRA Custodians may only permit publicly traded stocks, bonds and mutual funds, while the true Self-Directed IRA Custodian will allow non-traditional or non-traded investments (as described below).

Alternative Investments or Non-Traditional Investments

A true Self-Directed IRA Custodian will allow investors to acquire and hold non-traditional or non-traded investments, often referred to as Alternative Investments, inside their Self-Directed IRA.  Self-Directed IRAs administered by Exeter Trust Company provide investors with complete flexibility over the investments they choose.  Click here for a list of asset classes administered through Exeter Trust Company.
